I'm a shameless USC football fan. A third generation USC graduate (Class of 1980) I continue following the Trojans through the years.
Why is this blog called 21st Century Aeneid? Many college football fans wonder why a University would name their mascot after a people, who lost a war and everything they had. In my freshman year at USC I studied Virgil's Aeneid, which resurrected the Trojans through Aeneas, who escaped the burning of Troy. Aeneas went on to found Rome, which in later centuries conquered the known world, including the Greeks who had sacked their home city.
Today, the conquest rolls on under the stewardship of Pete Carroll who's teams have claimed two national titles, 4 Pac 10 championships, three Heisman Trophies and has finished within the top 5 of the BCS standings in every year since 2002.
After his team won the 2004 season national title Carroll said, "We're just getting started!"
And the conquest continues, clad in Cardinal and Gold.
